General Information

Expired .NZ domains: Reducing of renewal term after transfer or restore

Background of the upcoming change:
In the case of a transfer of an expired .NZ domain name or after a restore, the .NZ registry adds a period of 1, 2 or 3 months (depending on the former expiration date) to the domain since the registry supports monthly registration periods. The .NZ registry is charging us the corresponding transaction fee for these months.

However, RRPproxy does not support monthly registration periods for .NZ domain names which leads to differing renewal periods and additional costs for us. Thus, we are forced to take measures to ensure that the domain dates are mapped correctly. In addition, the fee for the extra months must be absorbed.

Effective March 16, 2016, the following will apply to expired .NZ domains names after a transfer or restore:

  • The renewal period within RRPproxy will be reduced (if necessary) from 12 months to 9, 10 or 11 month depending on the expiration date while we charge the fee for the full renewal period of 12 months.
  • The StatusDomain command with Authorization Code (UDAI) will be allowed for .NZ domains which are not active in RRPproxy. This will enable resellers to check the expiration date prior to a transfer:
command = StatusDomain
domain  =
auth    = UDAI
code                                      = 200
description                               = Command completed successfully
property[admin contact][0]                =
property[created date][0]                 = 2007-06-18 05:39:49
property[nameserver][0]                   =
property[nameserver][1]                   =
property[owner contact][0]                =
property[registration expiration date][0] = 2016-06-18 05:39:49
property[tech contact][0]                 =
property[updated date][0]                 = 2015-06-05 01:27:38

Please be aware that the auth code / UDAI expires after 30 days. Thereafter, the StatusDomain command no longer works for domains not active in RRPproxy.

Zone Info

.NZ is the so-called country code Top-Level-Domain (ccTLD) of the New Zealand.

Zone Use

A .NZ can be used and registered by anyone or any corporation.

  • Minimum: 3
  • Maximum: 63
  • Letters and numbers
  • Hyphens ("-"), however not at the beginning or directly in front of the TLD

Domain Registration

.NZ domains can be registered online through webinterface or API.

command         = AddDomain
domain          =
ownercontact0   = [owner handle]
admincontact0   = [admin contact]
techcontact0    = [tech contact]
billingcontact0 = [billing contact]
nameserver0     = [nameserver1]
nameserver1     = [nameserver2]
auth = [UDAI] (mandatory, if 3rd level equivalent exists)
  • If a 3rd level equivalent of the domain name already exists, it is mandatory to use the UDAI of that domain to register the .NZ domain name.
    • The UDAI will expire after 30 days, wherefore you might have to request a new UDAI as described in the Transfer Notes below.
  • If multiple 3rd level equivalents of the domain name exist, it is mandatory to solve these conflicts first before the .NZ domain name can be registered.
    Please find details about this process on the following website:
  • Please find additional information for customer communications in the following documents:

.NZ domains can be registered online through webinterface or API.

Transfers are possible.

Transfer Procedure

Transfers can be requested online via webinterface or corresponding API command.

command = TransferDomain
domain  =
action  = request
auth    = [UDAI]

Transfer notes

  • A .CO.NZ Domain Transfer must be initiated with a so-called Authorisation Code (UDAI, generally 8 characters), which can be obtained from the current registrar through the owner or Admin-C of the domain.
  • Please note that the UDAI changes automatically upon certain domain operations (e.g. Updates, Transfer)
  • The UDAI will expire after 30 days, wherefore you might have to request a new UDAI for already existing domain names. To initiate the generation of a new UDAI through the registry, please submit a ModifyDomain command like the following example:
command = ModifyDomain
domain  =
auth = ... (use a random value, since it will be overwritten by a new UDAI,
which is received by an event a few minutes after the domain update)

Transfer time

A transfer is done immediately.

Restores are generally possible. A restore can be requested via API command or via webinterface.

command = restoredomain
domain  =
