Zone Info

.SO is the official country code Toplevel Domain (ccTLD) of Somalia.

Important: New Registration Policies:

We informed you in the RRPproxy newsletter #2015-16 that the .SO registry system will be migrated to the Somali Network Information Centre (SONIC) on July 8 and that new registrations are currently frozen. Now, we would like to share with you the following updates related to the migration.

New Registration Policies: Please be informed that all new registrations will be governed by the new .SO Domain Name Registration Policies (version 1.1) which can be downloaded from Summary of changes from the previous version:

  • Article 5.13: Jurisdiction has been updated to Somalia
  • Article 5.5.2 introduces a nexus requirement of the registrant having a bona fide connection to Somalia. It also stresses the registry’s intolerance towards adult and gambling content.

Registrars and resellers are responsible to inform their customers of these policies. We will update the .SO appendix accordingly.

Each domain may have up to 13 nameservers at any point during its lifetime. Domains with no nameserver will have an "inactive" standard EPP status, which means that it will not be published in the DNS zone file. This will not however affect its appearance in the WHOIS database.

Restricted domain names can be found here Reserved_Restricted_Premium.

Registry shall be entitled at all times to cancel the registration of a Domain Name or delete same following receipt of a written instruction from the Government of the Republic of Somalia, indicating that said Domain Name is considered defamatory, contrary to public order or morality or otherwise not allowed under the laws of the Republic of Somalia. The Domain Name Holder expressly agrees and accepts that he or she shall not be entitled to claim any compensation or refund from the Registry when the latter implements the Government instruction referred to above.

.SO Transfers can either be done through the RRPproxy WebInterface or API.
Upon successfully transfering a domain, it is automatically renewed for one year. The registration period is extended by one year. A domain can not be transfered within the first 60 days following the registration.

Transfer procedure

command = TransferDomain
domain  =
action  = request
auth    = .....

Transfer notes

  • A .SO Domain Transfer has to be initiated with a so-called Authorisation Code, which can be obtained from the current registrar through the owner or Admin-C of the domain.
  • A successful transfer will result in a one year extension of the registration period.
  • Transfers will auto-Ack after five days if the losing Registrar has taken no action.
  • While in pendingTransfer, the losing Registrars may Ack (approve) or Nack (deny) the transfer request.
  • Valid transfer requests will result in the domain being place in pendingTransfer status for up to 5 days.

Transfer time

  • 5 days

Restores are possible. A restore can be requested via API command or via webinterface.
