.TEL: Lifting of DNS restrictions & new Telhosting platform on March 13

The ICANN board has recently approved the lifting of DNS restrictions for .tel domains and the Telnic board has subsequently approved an update to the registry’s Acceptable Use Policy to allow .tel registrants the freedom of choice with respect to the hosting and use of their .tel domain. This means that .tel users will be able to use their .tel to design and host their own website and other digital services of their choosing as of March 13, 2017.

Furthermore, the registry has designed a new Telhosting platform. As a consequence, the current Community Telhosting system (CTH) will be shut down. In future, the use of the new Telhosting platform is purely optional. Up until now, the registrars have provided the customers with access to and support for the CTH. From March 13, 2017, Telnic will assume this responsibility and the registrars will no longer need to provide this support service.

Key dates and changes in an overview:

Starting February 13, 2017, Telnic will be issuing all existing .tel domain holders with accounts for the new Telhosting platform to allow them sufficient time to prepare their new Telhosting account in advance of the cutover on March 13.

Important: Content will NOT be migrated automatically! .tel domain owner data that resides on the current Telhosting system will not be accessible after March 13. Any .tel domain owner that wishes to extract a copy of their data from the current system should run the BACKUP function from their current Telhosting account before this deadline. This will produce an XML file containing all of their data which can be used either as a reference for populating their new account or as a data source for populating an independent and separate 3rd party hosting solution.

Effective March 13, 2017:

  • DNS and usage restrictions will be lifted, registrants will have free choice in terms of the hosting and use of their .tel. The registrants can add their own DNS data to a .tel domain.
  • New optional Telhosting platform will be live and the current Telhosting platform will be shutdown.
  • Any Telhosting customer support requests should be referred to Telnic Support at cservice@telnic.org and they will handle them directly.
  • As we are not responsible for the new Telhosting platform, the parameters X-TEL-USERNAME / X-TEL-PASSWORD will become obsolete. Our system will not be able to give any information on login data to the platform. If customers use the new platform and needs support, they have to contact the registry directly.
  • .tel deletions will be processed in real time.
  • The registry will not be offering sub domain functionality in the new Telhosting platform. Should your customers wish to continue to host their domain on a similar version to the current Telhosting platform which incorporates sub domains, they are required to contact the registry at cservice@telnic.org in order to discuss the available options.

Please communicate these changes to your customers. Additionally, the registry will be sending out e-mails to all .tel registrants explaining the changes and how it affects them.

Basic .TEL rules:

1) .TEL is based on a special DNS management so nameserver changes are not possible
2) As long as you do not modify the content of your .TEL domain, it won't resolve

The first thing you need to do is to request your login details for http://live.telhoster.info (= the website where the information displayed on your domain can be edited).

You can request the login details via API or through your RRPproxy account using a StatusDomain command which looks as follows:

command = StatusDomain
domain = yourdomain.TEL

In the given output you will find the parameters X-TEL-USERNAME / PASSWORD.
These are your login details for http://live.telhoster.info

(Domains in "PendingCreate" state won't display these parameters unless the creation is completed. Please try again later)

Please note: After you have successfully logged in to the .tel administration page, modified your data and saved your settings it will take some time (approximately 4-12 hours) before your domain will be active.

With immediate effect, we offer you the opportunity to change the .TEL access data (user name and password for the. TEL control panel - live.telhoster.info) by using the command ModifyDomain. The data will be changed in realtime.

Attention.png IMPORTANT: Both user name and password must consist of 6 to 32 characters and begin with a letter.

Example for changing the username:

[COMMAND]
(required)
command        = ModifyDomain
domain         = example.tel
X-TEL-USERNAME = newUsername123

EOF

Example for changing the password:

[COMMAND]
(required)
command        = ModifyDomain
domain         = example.tel
X-TEL-PASSWORD = newPassword456

EOF

Example for changing both parameters:

[COMMAND]
(required)
command        = ModifyDomain
domain         = example.tel
X-TEL-USERNAME = newUsername123
X-TEL-PASSWORD = newPassword456

  • The losing registrar will also send an email to the Owner/Admin-C. allowing him/her to deny the transfer. If you do not respond to the email of the losing registrar, then the transfer will get processed successfully after 5 days.
Attention.png If the Email-Address in the WHOIS is invalid, then the transfer cannot be processed.If this is the case, then kindly contact your current registrar and ask him to update the WHOIS information accordingly.

    If the domain is locked, then the owner can demand that the domain will be unlocked.
  • Please note that we are only allowed to initiate a gTLD transfer after confirmation of the "ICANN Form of Authorization" by the current registrant. The policies can be viewed under http://www.icann.org/transfers/
  • Please ensure that the domain is older than 60 days otherwise the transfer will be denied.
