Companies and individuals outside China are allowed to register Chinese domain names again.

  • A Chinese Domain Name must contain at least one Chinese character. You may choose Chinese characters, ASCII letters (A-Z same as a-z), numbers (0-9) or hyphen (-) to compose your Chinese Domain Name. The length shall be limited within 20 characters (letters).

Please note:
The .CN registry changed its policies and relaxed the restrictions for .CN registrations. Under the new rules, companies and individuals outside China are allowed to register Chinese domain names again.

The following requirements for registrants outside China are effective as of Monday, September 3, 2012:

  • For individuals outside of China:
    • Applicants need to submit a scan or photo copy of an official document that could prove the identity of the registrant: ID card, passport, driver license, etc. All documents provided as a proof of identity must feature the name of the registrant.
    • A signed Letter of Commitment is no longer required!

  • For companies and organizations outside of China:
    • Applicants need to submit a scan or photo copy of their business license / business certificate.
    • The contact ID (Handle) needs to provide a contact name for the responsible person in the company/organization. A copy of passport or ID is not required.
    • A signed Letter of Commitment is no longer required!

Please send the required documents (identity proof / business license) to cn-audit@rrpproxy.net for domain name registrations.
Please pay attention to the correct subject line of the e-mail:

  • For new registrations: Register [domain name] documents, e.g. "Register example.cn documents"
  • Please provide the document in one of the following formats: .jpg, .png, .gif or .jpeg. (Document size max. 1MB!)

Please note:
If the documents are not received after 8 days the registration will fail.

Furthermore all applicants must be explicitly be informed of the following during the registration process:

  • Applicants must provide authentic, accurate and complete documentation
  • Applicants must confirm to have read and understood CNNIC's registration rules and policies
  • Applicants must adhere to all policies governing the contents of the website(s) under the domain name
  • In case the domain name is used for a website where the webserver is located in mainland China, a valid ICP number must be obtained from MIIT and provided to CNNIC through registrar
  • Applicants must accept full responsibility for the suspension of the domain name or any consequences caused by violations of the applicants commitments, and understand that CNNIC and the registrar undertake no responsibility in the event that it needs to interrupt the usage of the domain name.

Domain Modification


Registrant changes for .CN domains can be done online via api or webinterface. The exp. date will stay unchanged.

Deletion Process

A .中国 domain can be deleted through the webinterface or API command.

  • Contents that are opposed to the basic principles formulated in the Constitution;
  • Contents that disclose the State secrets, aim to jeopardize the security of the State and  overthrow the State power, and attempt to destroy the unification of the country;
  • Contents that are designed to harm the glory and interests of the State;
  • Contents that instigate national animosity, national discrimination, and destroy national unity;
  • Contents that do damage to religious policies of the State and propaganda heresy and feudal superstition;
  • Contents that disseminate rumors, disturb social order, and destroy social stability;
  • Contents that disseminate obscenity, eroticism, gambling, violence, murder, terror or induce crimes;
  • Contents that insult or calumniate other people, and infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of other people;
  • Contents that are forbidden by laws, rules and regulations.
  • Prohibited:
    • In accordance with "China Internet Domain Name Regulations", any organization or individual must not register or use domain names that violate the interests of the state, the society and the public. Any word of this kind must not be registered as Chinese Domain Names.
  • Restricted:
    • To ensure the stability and flexibility of domain name system, protect public interests, CNNIC limits the registration of certain words. When apply for registering restricted names, people shall apply to registrars for registration; CNNIC will review the application and make decisions according to practical needs of DNS or the specific situation of the applicant.


.中国 Domain-Transfers are possible. Upon successfully transfering a domain, it is automatically renewed for one year. The registration period is extended by one year.

Transfer notes

  • Please ensure, that you have a correct “Authorisation Code” associated with the domain, before initiating the transfer, otherwise it will fail.
  • Ensure that your respective domain does not have a lock-status (REGISTRAR-LOCK or HOLD). This can be seen in the WHOIS. If the domain is locked, then the owner can demand that this be unlocked.
  • Initiate the transfer on time and not just shortly before the domain expires. Transfers will be denied by the registry if they are not requested at least 16 days prior to a domain's expiration date.
  • Please ensure that the domain is older than 60 days otherwise the transfer will be denied.

Transfer procedure

  • .中国 Domain-Transfers can either be done through the RRPproxy WebInterface or API.
  • A .中国 Domain Transfer must be initiated with a so-called "Authorisation Code", which can be obtained from the current registrar through the owner or Admin-C of the domain.

Transfer time

.中国 Transfers are currently handled manually from the registry, please consider a longer transfer time.


Restores are possible. A restore can be requested via API command or via webinterface.
